So.... I did it! I did the half, it was crazy ridiculous hard and not really much at all like I thought it would be. I tried to start with the 2:30 pace group just to see if I could do it, what with race day excitement and adrenaline and whatnot. Uh, I think the whole race day adrenaline thing is good for, like, shorter feats of athletic excellence. Because adrenaline for miles 1-5, it turns out, equals jelly legs and screaming lungs for miles 8-13. But I did it! And under 3 hours, I mean BARELY, but that was my goal. So yay. And then I went to my parents' house and crashed all sweaty on their couch and then ate enough for 4 people and then crashed again. It was glorious.
Oh, but also! This was Halloween weekend, wasn't it?
I don't have my camera today (bummer) so I'll post some pictures tomorrow or Wednesday. But Friday night we had this super fun party with a bunch of friends that actually had kids at it, which turned out to be good because I went as Penelope and it was pretty much only the kids that got it. We had Buckethead, a train conductory person, a Longhorns fan, and Rob Bell, and then the kids were all manner of adorable kid things and you could have just eaten them up.
So here's a picture I stole from Jennifer of me as Penelope passing out candy:
And then Saturday night we went to the Budds' house to their big Halloween extravaganza and worked SO hard for so little pay, we are so put-upon and exploited. Jay kay. It was awesome; they had a haunted house portion where it was all divided off with big black curtains so the kids went through a certain way and had different scary parts throughout, and then we went out to this park and they had a whole walk through the park with scenarios or people jumping out at them. The theme was "disturbia"; they had various surveillance things set up throughout the house or the park and in different rooms you would see live feed from other parts of the house, so that the kids would feel like they were being watched all the time.
Out at the park I was hidden in a little dip on a slope right next to the path they were walking on, underneath an incredibly realistic camouflage tarp thingie, and so when they got like 2 feet from me I'd just jump up and scream really loud and they'd just about wet their pants. It was fun, and easy. No acting required.
Here's what I looked like that night, even though I didn't really have a major part and I'm not entirely sure the whole outfit was necessary:
And then when we got back from the park they had converted the haunted house into an actual maze where you had to try to find your way out, but still with scary people jumping out at you from random corners. I didn't do that part though, sadly.
Pictures tomorrow!
So I have roughly 3 1/2 weeks until I run a half-marathon. It was going to be December and I've got to admit, I'm glad I ended up having to move it up a bit. For one thing, I don't think I'm going to know anybody at this one, which is definitely a good thing, since I am riiiiiidiiiiiiculously slow. But steady! And the endurance thing I've actually got down pretty well. I've decided that I pretty much know I'll be one of the slowest people and that's ok, because I'm doing it. So yay. And for another thing, once I'm done with this I can switch out one or two days a week to something else, like the elliptical (Abbey's knees: "Thanks!") or riding my bike with my husband.
And also, last night I ran 6 miles WITHOUT EVER WALKING. Which is a bit of a personal record, so ha. I mean for straight running-the-whole-time miles. Ok, so basically, was the whole point of this post to brag about that? Maybe. Sue me.
